Cape Cod House Plans, Floor Plans & Designs

This coastal town is all about the wildlife—specifically its wild horses. Visitors flock to the island annually for the Pony Penning that has been held since 1925. The Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department holds the event, and it consists of a pony swim—in which the animals cross the Assateague Channel—and a pony auction. No one really knows how this population of horses came to be, though there are competing theories. Some say they are descendants of Spanish horses shipwrecked en route to Peru in the 17th century.

Wequassett is a true five-star hotel that dates back to the 1920s, when it opened as the Wequassett Inn. It’s now a sprawling 27-acre waterfront property, with 120 accommodations including suites, cottages, villas and private homes, many of which have private balconies and ocean views, and all of which are all outfitted with Molton Brown toiletries and free wifi. The beach resort features two outdoor pools, tennis courts, a fitness center and, of course, the neighboring 18-hole golf course at Cape Cod National Golf Club.

The setting, the service, the menu, and the execution are exceptional. We’ve been there many times but we are always so enthralled that we don’t actually get around to taking photos of our food and the room. To make up for that, we are including some shots from the owners from Instagram, and yes, the food actually is as good as it looks. The real draw here is Cuvée (this is, after all, the only Relais & Châteaux property in Cape Cod), the on-site fine dining restaurant that serves a New England-focused menu. Visitors at the nine-room Candleberry Inn on Cape Cod, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, stay in a the Georgian Federal-style Main House or Carriage House and some rooms include fireplaces, patios, and soaking tubs. The property sits on two acres of manicured grounds with views of Cape Cod Bay. The inn is within walking distance to the beach, restaurants, shops, and art galleries. Monterey State Beach offers a scenic backdrop for recreational activities, from fishing to kayaking. If you want to watch thrill seekers gliding through the air—and maybe even join in on the action—you’ll have a front row seat to coastal paragliders launching off on the Seaside end.

While some Cape Cod style homes are only one story tall, other floorplans take advantage of the high-sloping roof to add one or two bonus rooms upstairs or even a complete second floor. You can also keep your options open by building your home with an unfinished attic to start with and then if you decide you’d like the extra space, you can add insulation and renovate it to make it into a livable area. If you think you might like to do this at a later date, let your manufacturer know now so they can make the space more renovation-friendly. Whether it’s an ice cream cone after a day at the beach or kicking back with a cocktail while taking in a spectacular view, Cape Cod has few rivals when it comes to the classic summer vacation. From old standbys to some new surprises, here’s a guide to eating, playing, and making memories on the Cape.

Not only does it offer the best New England summer atmosphere, it's also home to exciting activities and small town summer charm. Here, you can spot wildlife, like whales (Cape Cod is near their migration path) and seals, indulge in delicious seafood, and enjoy miles upon miles of sandy coastline. The Upper Cape is best for families, the Mid-Cape is perfect for escaping the crowds, and the Lower Cape is home to great luxury hotels. Just a short drive from Savannah, Georgia, this coastal community is in the perfect spot for a day trip. Even during the summer, some parts of it manage to maintain that small-town vibe and don't get unbearably crowded, boasting an assortment of adorable ice cream and coffee shops, long stretches of sandy beaches, and great waterfront access.

It’s also a great spot to bring the family for beachcombing, tide-pooling, swimming and seaside strolls. The name of both the beloved Oregon destination and the cinematic stretch of protected shoreline, Cannon Beach is home to one of the most recognizable and photographed attractions in the state. From the moment you lay eyes on Haystack Rock, it’s hard not to grab a camera and start clicking away.

Much of Maine's Mt. Desert Island is covered by Acadia National Park—home to climbs like Cadillac Mountain and a sophisticated system of carriage roads financed by John D. Rockefeller Jr. But on the island's northeast corner, charming Bar Harbor is a destination in its own right. Skirting Frenchmen Bay, Bar Harbor began drawing visitors as far back as the mid-19th century when some of the Hudson River School, a group of artists that included the likes of Thomas Cole and Frederic Edwin Church, were taken with Maine's Down East landscapes.

There's a little something for everyone from families to couples—South Beach is better for those who want a little excitement in their atmosphere, whereas North Beach is a bit more quiet and contained. I've found it particularly great for families (having traveled here with a multigenerational group ages 1-68), and recommend the kitschy Original Crab Shack for a memorable meal. Or maybe you’re considering building elsewhere but crave quintessential New England charm?

The Needham-based travel site released a list of the top 25 B&Bs and inns in the U.S. on Tuesday as part of its Travelers’ Choice Awards for Hotels. Candleberry Inn on Cape Cod in Brewster ranked No. 1 in the U.S. and No. 7 in the world. John Stringfellow is a realtor, artist and web properties developer.

Those who want to spend more time on the water can sign up for a private kayak tour or go all out with a sailboat rental. There’s also the waterfront Outer Bar & Grille, in addition to a cozy bar, Thoreau’s. For an al fresco dining experience, you can order food at The Verandahs and eat by the fire pits, and you can also eat poolside on the Pleasant Bay Terrace.

From Forbes Five-Star fine dining to casual beach fare, Ocean House offers a variety of restaurants that elevate traditional New England flavors into something entirely new.

Each of the Ocean House’s 49 guestrooms, 20 Signature Suites, and the cottages are inspired by Watch Hill's magnificent oceanfront setting and rich history. Create an account to save and share your favorite homes and searches. The Cape Cod Style modular home is known for its sloped roof and classic New England appeal. Cape Cod homes are often perfectly symmetrical with shingles or wood slats covering the house, decorative shutters on the front-facing windows, and dormers on the roof.

With roots dating back as far as medieval England, the style first appeared in the northern American colonies (i.e. New England), reached peak popularity during the Colonial Revival of the 20th Century, and remains a functional and beloved design type today. The typical Cape Cod house plan is modest in size, rectangular, symmetrical and accommodating to a variety of interior layouts. The main level will usually feature the living areas and a big central fireplace by which family, friends, and guests may gather around, while the upper half story of the plan will support the bedrooms, bonus space, or kid play areas.
